Veronica McTernan Fund
The Scottish Fabians are delighted to launch The Veronica McTernan fund to help Scottish Labour women to break down barriers to power.
Veronica McTernan was a lifelong Labour Party member and activist. She stood as a council candidate several times, for Edinburgh and Lothians councils, and latterly in the Borders. Alongside her political activism, Veronica was active in her community, particularly through her involvement in local school councils. She was also a great encourager of others on their political journey, through campaigning and fundraising in her local party. Therefore it could not be more fitting that with the support of the McTernan family we are launching a fund in her memory.
This fund will give financial assistance to women who are members of Scottish Labour to support their political engagement. There are two strands to the fund:
● Fabians Women’s Network Mentoring Programme
Each year, the fund will offer two grants to Scottish women who have been selected to participate in the Fabians Women’s Network Mentoring Scheme. These grants, of up to £500 each, will cover the costs associated with participating in the scheme.
● Local campaigner grants
Any woman in Scottish Labour can apply for up to £250 to support them in a local campaign, or to develop their campaigning skills. This could be a campaign for selection or election to political office, or a community campaign they are involved in, whether as an activist or an elected woman. Applications could be for:
○ publicity for the campaign
○ hosting a community event
○ personal development, such as attending training or development courses
○ practical matters such as travel or child care costs, or buying a suitable outfit or shoes for campaigning.
Applications will be overseen by Maggie McTernan and the National Manager.
